Novelista y poeta británico. Hijo de un cantero y constructor, Hardy se dedicó a la arquitectura antes de empezar a escribir poesía y luego, prosa. Muchas de sus novelas están ambientadas en el condado imaginario de Wessex, comenzando por la segunda, Bajo el verde bosque (1872). Lejos del mundanal ruido (1874), que representó su primer éxito, fue seguida por The Return of the Native [El regreso del nativo] (1878), El alcalde de Casterbridge (1886), Tess la de los Urbervilles (1891) y Jude el oscuro (1895), todas las cuales manifiestan su pesimismo estoico y su sentido de la inevitable tragedia de la vida. La popularidad sostenida de estas novelas (muchas han sido adaptadas al cine), se debe en gran medida a un estilo muy variado pero accesible y a la combinación de tramas románticas con personajes presentados de manera convincente. Las obras de Hardy estuvieron cada vez más reñidas con la moral victoriana. La indignación pública que generó Jude le repugnó tanto que dejó de escribir novelas. Volvió al género poético con Wessex Poems [Poemas de Wessex] (1898), Poems of the Past and the Present [Poemas del pasado y del presente] (1901) y The Dynasts [Los dinastas] (1910), monumental drama poético acerca de las guerras napoleónicas. Gran parte de su obra lírica ha sido traducida al español en los volúmenes Los poemas del novelista, El gamo ante la casa solitaria y Poemas (todos editados en España).
